Once upon a time there were two brothers, ‘Then’ and ‘Than’. These two brothers did not look alike, however, they were often mistaken for one another. One brother especially excelled, that was ‘Then’.
And ‘Than’ could not understand why people always mistook him for his brother and never seemed to give credit to him for any of the work he did. ‘Then’ and ‘Than’ always knew they had a different purpose to fulfill and both of them grew frustrated. ‘Then’ loved his brother and felt terrible when he would get credit for something that really belonged to ‘Than’.
As time went on, things did not improve, in fact, things grew worse. If you looked around the world you would sometimes think that ‘Than’ must have disappeared and that his brother had stepped in to take his place.
Before the end of time, ‘Than’ and ‘Then’ hope that people will wake up and start giving ‘Than’ credit for his work.
These two have many cousins. A couple of them are ‘Your’ and ‘You’re’, who seem to have similar problems. Other cousins with this problem are 'Accept' and 'Except', ‘Hear’ and ‘Here’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Breath’ and so many more.
When these cousins get together, you want to believe that the topic of conversation usually leads to the mistaken identity issue. None of these cousins are alike but they get treated alike, exchanged as if there are no differences between them. Try and remember that like you, they wish to be themselves, to do their job as best they can and to make a difference in this world. If you’ve ever mistaken one of these for another, can you please try and remember the proper use of each word?
